Montreal’s Ladies of the Canyon were flat-out ambushed by our crew before their set at the Palomino Club, yet they calmly obliged by packing into the stairwell for this performance. The band is called after the song and second album by (former Albertan) Joni Mitchell – clearly a tribute to their own love for stories in song. Maia Davies talks about the writing process of Haunted Woman:
“Jasmine’s parents own a farm in Ontario, which we often go to chill and play/write.Well, one weekend Jaz’s dad took out his guitar and was showing me this great John Prine song I had never heard, and taught it to me in that old fashioned way of passing down songs to the younger generations by oral tradition. I was really inspired by that, the wide open space of the countryside and the events of my life at the time, a kind of searching for wisdom and healing after the culmination of many relationships and friendships gone wrong. It came quite naturally, and after putting the finishing touches on it I showed it to the girls who immediately adopted it.”
