Welcome to the West Celebrates Three Years of music & film

Third Anniversary features city-wide concerts over three nights

Three years ago, a collective of Calgarians staved off a wild blizzard in the basement of the Franklin Building in the city’s East Village. The evening of music and film which ensued, spelled a new tradition of intimate live performance in these parts and those abroad. Our online catalogue of music videos has featured an array artists across North America, while our series of handcrafted events offer a refreshing take on Alberta hospitality. This year, we commemorate our anniversary with three special musical showcases (December 6-8) in conjunction with our first film residency with Los Angeles vocalist, Rachel Fannan.

On Thursday, December 6th begins the weekend’s festivities with a sinewy-windowed, hot apple cider-laden night at Weed’s Cafe. For many years, Weed’s has been our abode for the tremendously cosy, ‘Welcome Home Series’ – a venue wherein the players who dawn its cedar platform are surrounded 180 degrees by their audience. Kicking off the evening will be Gu Zheng instrumentalist, Vi An who will be followed by ethereal-electro duo, AM Static. Thursday’s headliner, Lung Puma Animals Skulls, will deliver a rare set leaning toward the band’s heavy metal persuasions.

Friday is a best-garb sort of affair at downtown Calgary’s historic, Arrata Opera Centre. In the spirit of the city-wide Cultural Capital of Canada celebrations, we are proud to congregate inside this 1906-built relic before a pristine pipe organ. The opening soundscape will be provided by Calgary Philharmonic offshoot, Classical Revolution followed by burgeoning folk rock ‘n’ roll quartet, Reuben and the Dark. Capping off these fantasies: a performance from Californian heartache & romance balladeer, Rachel Fannan, who will be accompanied by a cast of local creatives.

Saturday we pay homage to the Heart of the New West with a proper dustup within the circa-1890s schoolhouse at the Area. On this evening, Welcome to the West’s proud traditions of spruce trees, white lights, gourmet meals in a winter paradise will live strong. Snow Owl’s siren-psychedelia will roll into the frosty night. The Bitterweed Draw are next up with a raucous honky throw down to lead into the evening’s headlining troubadour (Quebec by way of Vancouver), Petunia.

Welcome to the West would like to thank these incredible sponsors for making this weekend and our first film residency possible: Calgary 2012, Village Brewery, Calgary Sound Rentals, CJSW, Bridgeland Market, Market Collective and Bodhi Tree Yoga Centre.

At the heart of our success has been the dedicated support and talents shared along the way. Our yearly winter showcase is meant to tribute those we have worked alongside, while also acting as our chief fundraising endeavour for what has been a grassroots movement, through-and-through.
